WHERE IS KURADJI TENT EMBASSY?

The current dispute is related to a proposed 20 stage housing development that will total, if not stopped, 1200 dwellings. Stockland Trust Group, a Sydney-based property developer, is behind the proposal. Currently Stockland are attempting to develop stages 1-6 of the proposal despite continuous and ongoing Indigenous and community opposition.

As a result of public meetings and community pressure the state government announced a Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the 'balance of the site' in October 2002. The sessions have now completed (June 2003), with recommendations expected later this year.

The campaign to protect Sandon Point has a long history, stretching back for almost 20 years. The Sandon Point Aboriginal Tent Embassy (SPATE) was set up at McCauley's Beach in December 2000, and is staffed 24 hours a day. Indigenous people have come together at the request of Uncle Guboo Ted Thomas to watch over the land and a sacred burial site (approximately 6000 years old) that was uncovered during a storm in 1998.
