Hello
all,
With the help of some people from OCAP (Ontario
Coalition Against Poverty) here in Toronto, I was able to deliver to Barrick's
corporate headquarters a copy of the same letter (Notice to Quit) that Uncle
Chappy presented at the Barrick minesite during the October convergence.
About 16 or so people rode the elevator of the Canada Trust Tower to the 37th
floor, and hung out in their plush lobby, enjoying the view and the complimentary
lollies available at the reception desk, until we were able to speak to an
official representative. While our first choice, Peter Munk was "unavailable",
we were met by a nervous Victor Borg, Vice President of Corporate Relations
to deliver the notice to quit
letter and express our support of opposition to the mine by the traditional
owners. We had "assurances" from Mr Borg that a reply would be forthcoming
and that the concerns expressed in the letter would be addressed. (I won't
be holding my breath).
While it was a small, peaceful action, it lets Barrick know that there are
many supporters of the campaign to save lake cowal, some right in the city
of their main operations, and that we will not be intimidated or discouraged
from demonstrating our opposition to their acts of destruction and desecration.
Cheers from Toronto,
Simon Maberley
ps
good to hear that the power transmission has been
halted. I might not be back for the Dec 10 camp, but
will try to send video footage of this action for your
viewing pleasure.
